1) the soilders on the corner were not as strict and disrespectful as these ones.the one on the corner smiled and told Kirsti that she was pretty. these ones were on a mission and were not nice about it.
2) He spoke in code because the Nazis tapped into the phone lines and listened to peoples' conversations.
3) the Nazi turned away after asking them where they were going, then suddenly asked if they
were going for the New Year. Mrs.johansen said no. then Kirsti said, "And guess what!" she paused for a while. Annemarie thought she was going to give everything away. " I'm going to visit my Uncle Henrik, and i'm wearing my brand new shiny black shoes!"

1. In the book Number the Stars the soldiers that came to the Johansen's appartment were different from the soldiers on the street because they were at a higher rank than the others.

2. Papa spoke to uncle Henrik in code because the Nazi soldiers could tap into their conversations and hear what they were saying.

3. The scene on the train was very beautiful. There was a lot of pretty trees and fresh air. The author, Lois Lowery, created suspense by makeing two German soldiers come and question them.

1. The three german soldiers that came in the apartment were diffrent from the soldiers on the street because the three are stiff and better trained soldiers buton the road the soldiers are are not as trained. For example, the three soldiers that came into the apartment did whatever they pleased and the soldiers on the street did nothing but stop people if they were being rude and questioned them.

2.Papa spoke to Uncle Henrick in code because Germans can tap into phone lines and find out anybodys plans, for example, Papa speakes to uncle Henrik as if there was nothing suspicous going on.

3. the author created suspense when they were on the train. They did that by Kirsti speaking up to a German officer when he asked the question only a Jew could answer.

1)The two uniformed soldiers are diffrent becausethe three soldiers weremuch older and serious at what there doing. On the other hand the two soldierswith one named the"giraffe"were not as serious by touching Kirsti's hair and remembering his daughter.
2)Papa talked to Uncle Hendrickin code because the nazis controlled the telephonepolls and could tap into coversations so when they said Mama was bringing cigars they were actually bringing Ellen.
3)thye auther created suspence by the natizsgetting off the train and going over two her car and asked they if they are celibrating the new year.Kirsti had to blad it out and say that ellen was having a new year and then she talked about her shoes and the souldier laughed.

1. The German soldiers from chapter 2 are different than the soldiers from chapter 5 becuse the soldiers from chapter 2 were young and they stroked Kirsti's hair but the soldiers from chapter 5 grabbed ellen's hair which made her wince and these soldiers were older.
2. Papa and Uncle Henrik spoke in code because if the Nazis tapped in to their converstion it would sound normal.
3. In the begining of the scene on the train everything is fine and Mrs.Johansen has memorys of her childhood and you think it's fine. Then the a Nazi soldier comes up and asks Where they were going and why. After that he asks a question to find out if their Jews which they're not Annemarrie thinks kirsti is going to slip and tell that it's Ellen who is a Jew that it is ellen's jewish new year, that is were it gets scary.

1) The soldiers were different because the ones in chapter 5 were higher in rank. The soldiers on the corner were younger, and sometimes went out of postion, like when stroking Kirti's hair. The soldiers that came to the Johansens in the middle of the night did the arresting.
2) Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code in case the soldirs listened to their conversation. If the soldiers discovered they went against the Nazis, they would be arrested.
3) The author created suspense by streching o

3) The author created suspense by dragging out what Kirti said. It made you wonder whether Kirsti would give them away or not.

1)The three uniformed German soldiers who came to the Johansen's apartment in the middle of the night were different than the two soldiers on the street because the soldiers on the street were nicer and weren't as mean as the soldiers that came in the night.

2)Mr. Johansen used code words to make it sound like they were having a regular conversation because the Nazis could tap the phone and hear their conversation. Mr. Johansen said that he was bringing cigarettes when he meant he was bringing Ellen.

3)The scene on the train was Mrs. Johansen and the girls siting on the seat when the Nazis come. Annemarie is afraid that Kirsti would give away that Ellen was Jewish

#1The soldiers who came to the Johansens house were different from thesoldiers on the corner because the soldiers who came to there house were higher rank than the soldirs onthe corners. Also the soldiers on the corner were younger and nicer.
#2 Papa spoke to uncle Hendrik in a code because the Nazi's tabed the phones, and papa and uncle Hendrik were taking about bringing a jewish person to uncle hendriks house.

#3 The auther created suspense by putting the soldiers on the same train as Ellen and the Johansens. Also by makeing the reader think Kirsti was going to give Ellens secret away.

1. The German soldiers that came to the Johansens during the night were different from the ones on the street because the ones on the street were young and weren't as harsh as the ones that came to the apartment.

2. Papa spoke to uncle henrik in code because if he said he was sending a jew in those words on the phone the if some one some how listened to the conversation then they would be caught.

3. The scene on the train with Mrs. Johansen and the girls had Nazi soldiers on the train and saw all different towns from the train.

1) Well the soldiers in chapter 5 are diffeerent then the two soldiers in chapter 1 because the street soldiers were often young and sometims ill at ease and let the harsh pose slip and they smiled at Kristi. Then the soldiers in chapter 5 were all dressed in uniform and seirous.
2)I think papa talked to uncle Henrik in a special code because he was talking about Ellen and they hiding her and if the Nazi's hear they would get in HUGE trouble.
3)Well Lois Lowry crated suspence when the Nazi asked if the Johansens were going onto a trip to visit their New Year to see if they were Jews. Annemarie was scared kristi would say to the soldier that she wasn't celabrating the New Year but their friend Ellen was. But that gave me huge suspence but Kristi ended up saying that she had loved her new black shoes.

1. THe Nazis soilers were a lot older and a lot tougher Than the soldiers in chaper one.
2. MR. JOhansen was speaking in code with uncle Henrik so the Nazis couldn't understand their plan.
3.The author created suspense by makeing Kirsti almost blurt out the plan. Ds 24

1.The soldiers were different because the ones on the corner were nice. They didn't scream at the girls, he even said that Kirsti was pretty and looked like his daughter. the obes that came at night were the Gestapo and very mean. One graqbbed Ellen's hair very hard. They really never backed down

2. He spoke to Uncle Henrick n the phone in cofe so that if the Nazis were tapping the phone lines they wouldn't know that they were really bringing Ellen there to hide. Also so if a neighbor was spying on them he would have no idea.

3. the author created suspense by having the Nazi soldiers ask Mrs. Johansen if it was their new year. She said that it was only october. Annemarie thought in her head that kirsti would say oh it's my friend ellen's new year. but she didn't and everything was ok ,but very suspenseful

1. The German soldiers that came at night were different from the ones on the street because their faces were alot more serious, they were older and even meaner for exampill when the soldier on the corner in chapter one reached down to touch Kirsti's hair and she pushed his hand away, he smiled and sayed she was cute. But the soldiers that came to there appartment was very mean and loud and when Mrs.Johansen asked him to be quit he ecnored her.
2.He talked in code because he didn't want people to know he was bring a Jew.
3. The Germen soldiers came own the train and were quisting people to sea if there were people who were jewish. But once they get up to where Annmaire was sitting the the German soldiers asked if they were going there for the new year and they were afraid that Kirti was going to tell the soldiers that it was Ellens new yaer

1. The three uniformed soldiers were different because in chapter 1 the soldiers were smiling and they twirled Kirsti's hair. The ones in chapter 5 were more serious and were less likely to laugh. In the book also the soldier grabbed Ellen's hair and made her wince, not gently like the other soldiers did in chapter 1.
2.He spoke to Uncle Henrik in code beacause if he talked in regular words and someone heard him like a Nazi or a neighbor they might get suspicious and tell the Nazis.
3.On the train the girls were all looking out the window. When the Nazi soldiers boarded the train. They all were getting scared that they might find out who Ellen really was and that she was Jewish. The Nazi soldier came up to them and asked if it was their new year to try to trick them into saying that it was. When Kirsti said " and guess what?" they were all afraid that Kirsti would give away Ellen's identity and tell the Nazi that Ellen was Jewish.

1) The three German soldiers were different from the two on the street because the two on the street were much younger and let kids, especially, off the hook. The three German soldiers were much older and angrier.

2) Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik on the phone in code because one of the Nazis could tap into the phone lines and listen to their conversation.

3) There was a place called the Deer Park in Klampenborg and Kirsti said that she didn't see any deer because they were hiding. They also saw the sea where they used to visit their grandparents who are now dead. When they saw the Baltic sea it was a blurr as they continued north. The author made it suspenseful by saying it was a blurr.

1. The uniformed soldiers who came to the Johansens were different from the street corner soldiers because they were much more stricter and awful than the other lower level soldiers on the street. Also, when the "Giraffe" caught the girls running he told Kirsti that she was pretty like his own daughter, smiled at her, and even touched her hair. The higher level soldiers would never smile at suspects or call them pretty.
2. Annemarie's Papa spoke in code because someone at a telephone pole could easily listen in on there conversation about having Ellen, a Jew in hiding, and report the family to a Nazi soldier.
3. When the girls and Mrs. Johansen got off of the train to Gilleleje, the group was stopped by Nazi soldiers and they were asked where they were going and if they were celebrating the New Year. Kirsti knew that it was Ellen's Jewish New Year and still a little kid, was known to spill the beans sometimes. When Kirsti wanted to say something to reply to the soldiers, she was shushed by her mother, who thought she knew what Kirsti was going to say and get them caught. Instead what Kirsti was trying to say was about her new black shoes.

1) The soldiers were different because they never had a smile on their face. The soldiers in Chapter 1 had a smile on their face when Kristi talked to them.

2) Papa spoke in code because if the Nazis were listening they wouldn't understand them. For example, they wouldn't know that Lise is Ellen, a Jew. This would save the Johansens and Ellen's life.

3) The Nazis soldiers came up to Mrs. Johansen and the children and said. "Where are you going?" Mrs. Johansen said that they were going to her brother for a visit. "To celebrate the new year?" The Nazis asked hoping to catch them off guard. There was fear that Kristi would spill Ellen's secret, but she didn't.
The author created suspense when Kristi said "Guess what?" to the Nazis. If she said "Guess what? This is our friend Ellen and she just celebrated her new year." This would give Ellen away that she is Jewish.

1.the three soldiers in the uniforms were different from the soldiers on the street because the soldiers on the street seemed nicer and they showed respect unlike the three soldiers in the uniforms.
2. Papa spoke to uncle Henrick in phone code so that nobody could hear them talking about how they're bringing a jewish girl to stay.
3. The author created suspence by making you think that Kirsti was going to give away Ellen

1) The three uniformed German soldiers who came to the Johansen's house diffrent form the two on the cornners because, the three soldiers never smiled. They were very serious. The soldiers that were on the corner smiled at Kirsti and even laughed a little.

2) Papa spoke to Uncle Hernrik on the phone in code because, he didn't want the German soldiers to hack into their conversation and hear that papa was sending over his wife, Annemarie,Kirsti, and Jewish girl. Then the soldiers would stop the Johansen's even before they left the house.

3) The scene on the train was very suspencefull because, they thought that when the Nazi's asked "areyou celabrating the new year?" they thought that Kirsti was goin to give it away and say,"No i'm not but my friend ellen here is."

1. They were different because they were described as serious and older then the ones on the street corner. They were also very strict, whereas the ones on the corner smiled and played with Kirsti's hair and said she looked like his own daughter. These soliders were a higher rank as the Gastapo (secret police) than the ones on the corners.

2. He spoke in code because the Nazis tapped into the phone system and listened to people's converasations. They spoke in code so the Nazis wouldn't suspect anything. The code-words he used were ' a pack of cigerettes' and 'is the weather good for fishing', so just in case the Nazis were listening, they wouldn't thinkthey were talking about something suspicous.

3. She created suspense by having the Nazis on the train ask the Johansens and Ellen if it was there new year, and Mrs. ohansen said no, it was only October. Then Kirsti blurted out, "Guess what!" Annemarie thought that she was going to say "This is our friend Ellen , and it's her new year!" But instead she said ," I'm going to my uncle's and I'm wearing my new black shoes!" This creats suspense because you think the Nazis will find out Ellen is really not Lise and really Ellen Rosen.
