Chapters 13 and 14

1. What is the significance of the "loose" step at Uncle Henrik's house? How did Lois Lowry use the author craft foreshadowing to hint at the importance of the step?

2. How does Annemarie's running to Uncle Henrick's boat like the famous children's story, "Little Red Riding Hood"?

3. Why does Annemarie's mother tell her if she is stopped on the path by Nazi soldiers that she should act as a "airheaded" child? In your opinion, who should Annemarie try to imitate?

1. The signifigcance of the loose step is when Mr.Rosen trips on it and the package falls out. Mama is nagging him to fix the step. also alot of people trip on it, including Annemarie.
2. it is like "Little Red Riding Hood" because she is Little Red Riding Hood, the Nazis are the wolf, and Uncle Henrik is the Grandma. It is also like the story because Annemarie is carrying food.
3. She tells her that so it doesn't seem like she's bringing something very secret and maybe even illegal. It will seem like she is bringing something of no importance to her uncle. I think that Annemarie should imitate Kirsti because Kirsti doesn't care if there are Nazis around or not.

1. The signifacance of the loose step at uncle Henrik's house is people keep tripping on the step. The forshadowing Lois Lowry uses to hint the importance of the step is when the Johansen's arrive mama says to uncle Henrik "You need to fix the step because someone is going to trip." mrs. Johansen was right someone did trip.

2. Annemarie's running to uncle Henrik's boat is like the story "Little red riding hood" because she has a basket full of goods she needs to bring to her uncle and little red riding hood had a basket full of goods and to bring it to her Grandma. Also Annemarie got caught by the Nazi soldiers which in little red riding hood she gets caught by the wolf.

3.Annemarie's mother says that if she gets stopped by a Nazi solier that she should act like an airheaded child because then it seems like she just is doing a little favor for her mother and is going to see her uncle. i think she should try to act like Kirsti.

#1 Lois Lowry used the auther craft foreshadow by making the old man tripping over the step, and then when Mr. Rosen tripps on it he loses a very important package.

#2It is like little red riding hood because annemarie is like little red ridding hood by giving the basket to uncle henrick who is suposed to be the grandmother.

#3 Mrs. Johansen told annemarie if she is stoped by the Nazi's to acted like a airheaded chiled, because it wont be like she is delivering a secret pacage. I think she is supposed to be like kirsti because kirsti is a airheaded chiled.

1)the significance of it is that it is used mant times in the story. Mr. Rosen tripped on it, momma tells them to watch their step coming into the house, and momma refers to it whn she says that Uncle Henrik needs a wife, so it is used many times. She did it by momma saying watch your step, and having people tripping on it.

2)it is like little red riding hood because in the woods (where Annemarie is and were little red riding hood takes place)the nazis and their dogs are like the wolf and Annemarie is like little red riding hood. Her Uncle Henrik is like grandma because annemarie has to get to him in the book as little red riding hood has to get to her grandmother.

3)Her mother tells her that so if a Nazi soldier does stop her, she at least knows how to act and what facial expression to make and she really isn't lying if she tells the soldier tht because she honestly has no idea what is in the package. Annemarie should imitate Kirsti because she usually doesn't really know what's going on, or doesn't really pay attension to it, or doen't understand what's going on.

1. The sigificance of the loose step at Uncle Henrik's house is that someone will trip on it. The author forshadowed when Mr. Rosen tripped on the step. Later in the book they foung the packet lying on the ground.

2. Annemarie's run is like "LIttle Red Rideing Hood" because she is running through the woods, and there could be dangers along the way.

3. Mrs. Johansen told this because isf she acts as if she was just a little girl delivering somthing the Nazis would not acouss her. I think she should try and imitate Kristi. Kristi does not care about the Nazis. If Annemarie acted like her the Nazis will think of her as a little girl trying to have fun.

1) The first fore shadow is when Mrs. Johansen tells Uncle Henrik to fix the step. Next, Mr. Rosen trips on it in the middle of the night. After, Annemarie trips on the step running to Mama. This shows that Lois Lowery strings every tiny event together.
2) Annemarie is like Little Red Riding Hood, bringing food to Grandma, though in this case, "Grandma" is Uncle Henrik. Also, the wolf is the soldiers and dogs who stop her. The scenery is also alike, alone in a dark forest.
3) Annemarie should imitate Kirsti, and her happy-go-lucky spirt. It would look like she was a mere, silly little child who was bringing her scatter-brained uncle lunch.

1. the significance of the loose step was how it said that mama old uncle henrick to fix the step because later mr.johansen tripped on that same step and he lost the important packet.

2. its like that story because little red riding hood has to run to her grandmothers house to bring her food and annemarie is running to uncle henrick to bring him "lunch" or the important packet.

3. she tells her to act like that because it would make her seem less suspicious and it is normal for a little girl to bring their uncle lunch because he forgot it.

1. The significance of the step is in the begging when they get to Uncle Henrick's house annemarie's mom says he should fix the step and then when Mr.Rosen trips on the step the inportant packet falls from his pocket.

2. She is like Red Riding Hood carring a basket of food to her Grandma who is uncl Henrick also the wolf is the nazie soldiers.

3.She wants the nazie soldiers to think she is no more than a little child carring her uncles lunch to him. Also she should act like Kirstie.

1) the singificance of the loose is when Mr.Rosen is given the package he tripped over the loose step and dropped the package on the step.
2)It's the same because Annemarie is little red ridding hood and she has a basket full of food to give to Uncle Henrik is grandma.
3)because if she looks like she has somthing to hide she is in big trouble so she try's to immitate Kiristi.

1. It was important because when mr. rosen tripped on it the important packet fell out.

2. It is like little red riding hood because she one has a red sweater. Two she has a delivery to make for her uncle. Three she is stopped by nazis instead of a wolf.

3. She tells her because nazis wouldn't pay much attention to a girl who has an excuse of bringing a clumsy uncle a basket of lunch that he forgot. She could imitate kirsti because she is the type of person that would be stumbleing through the forest so early.

#1. The significance of the " loose" step is that when Mr. Rosen trips he loses the paket Peter gave to him.
#2. Annemarrie's running to uncle henrik's boat is like the "Little Red Riding Hood" because she has a little basket too. The Nazi soldiers are the wolf, Annemarie is the little red riding hood, and uncle Henrik is the grandmother.
#3. Mrs. Johansen said that to Annemarie because if the soldiers stop her she sould act like Kirsti simple minded and not Knowing any thing, to just look like a girl delivering lunch to her uncle who forgot it.

1) Whenever anyone goes out of the hous ethey trip on it. Then on chapter 13 mama found the package that Peter had given to Mr. Rosen. Then Annemarie has to go and gve the package to Mr. Rosen. The loose step is mentioned alot in this book, it probably will have to be a big event later in the book. The package being there was a big event for the step too because if a Nazi saw and looked inside it, it could be something about the escape.

2)When Annemarie was running through the woods it reminded her of the story Little Red Ridinghood because, she has to deliver a package to the Rosen's (grandmother) also she has a red coat on like little red ridinghood. She compares the Nazis to the big bad wolf.

3) Mama tells Annemarie to act as if she was a "airhead child" because if the Nazis catch her she needs to pretend she is just having fun and doesn't know what is happening. It reminds me of Kristi.

1) the significance of the loose step is that everyone that walks on it trips on it. Then when Peter was supposed to bring the package to mr. Rosen he tripped and fell on the loose step. The step is making Annemarie go onto the big adventure to give Mr. Rosen the package all because of the step.

2) While Annemarie was running it reminded her of the story Little Red Riding Hood because, Annemarie had to deliver the package to Mr. Rosen like Little Red Riding Hood to give her grandmother cookies. Also Annemarie compares the soldiers to the Nazis.

3)Her mother told Annemarie to run as fast as she could then if you hear a nazi you act "airheaded" and act as if you have no idea why they stopped her and act BRAVE. This is reminding me of Kristi.

1) The significance of the loose step was that Mrs. Johanson had said to be careful of it and Mr. Rosen tripped over it which was foreshadowing.

2) Annemarie's running to Uncle Henrick is related to Little Red Riding Hood because Little Red Riding Hood was scared that there would be a wolf and Annemarie was scared that there would be Nazis.

3) In my opinion I would act like Kirsti who didn't know what the Nazis were or what they were doing to the Jews.

1. The significance of the loose step was Mr.Rosen tripped over it and the package fell out of his pocket, and that was a foreshadow for annemarie running to give the hankerkief to Uncle Henrik.

2. It was like the story because she was wearing a red sweater bring a basket of food (and the package) to uncle henrik , like little red riding hood was bring the basket of food to her granma in the dark woods.

3. If she acts like an airheaded child, the nazis wouldn't suspect her . She should try to imitate Kirsti.

1. The significance of the loose step is that is when Mr. Rosen slipped on the step he dropped the packett that Peter gave him. She used a foreshadow by when Mrs. Johansen cleaned the house she told him he should fix the step.

2.It's like the famous story Little Red Riding hood because Little Red had to deliever the basket to her grandmother through the woods. Also, the wolf would become the Nazi soldiers. Just like the fairy tail she was caught by the big bad guy. Finally, Uncle Henrik would become the grandma trying to recieve a package.

3.Annemarie should imitate her little sister Kirsti because if she acted like Kirsti she would act like someone who had no idea how bad the Nazis were. Also she would act like nothing was going on and she had no idea what was in the basket.

1. The significance is that the loose step caused Mr. Rosen to trip and drop the important packet. Lois Lowry hinted that it was going to be important because the fact that someone triped on a step wouldn't be nessisary to put in a book as a detail unless it had meaning. Later we find out that it has meaning.

2. In Annemarie's situation, she would be Little Red Riding Hood, carrying the basket of goodies (the packet) to her grandma (Uncle Henrik). The wolf would obviously be the Nazis.

3. Annemarie's mother tells her to do this so if she is stopped, the Nazis would think of her as no threat, a mere little girl who doesn't know anything and is walking down the path like everyday. She sould try to imitate Kirsti. Kirsti is the kind of silly girl the Nazis would think nothing of.

3. Annemarie's mother told her to act like a silly little girl if she got stopped by the soldiers so that she wouldn't get in trouble.

1) The significance of the loose step at Uncle Henrik's house is that 2 or 3 people trip on the stairs including Annemarie when she goes to help her mom.
2) Annemarie's running to Uncle Henrik's boat is like Little Red Riding Hood because she gets stopped by the Nazis (the wolf) and when she is trying to deliver lunch to Uncle Henrik (Grandma).
3) Annemarie should be imitating Kirsti because she is very young and is calm with the soldiers.

1. Anniemarie tripping on the loose step when she was trying to be quiet makes the story have more suspense because I really wanted to find out if her mother was alive.

2. Annemarie runing to Uncle Henrick's boat is like the story "Little Red Riding Hood" because of the noises she heard in the woods and when Litte Red Riding Hood meet the wolf Annemarie meets the soldiers.

3. Annemarie's mother wanted to her act like an "airhead" so that the soldiers would not think she was hiding anything. Little girls can act that way and no one really thinks about it. I think she should have acted like Kirsti because Kirsti really doesn't understand what the soldiers were all about and she can act natural.

1.Everyone trips on it and mr.Rosen trips and looses the package.

2. Annemarie is Little Red riding and the Nazi's are the wolf. Uncle Henrik was the grandmother. Annemarie brings the basket to Uncle Henrik through the wooods.

Annemarie needs to act like an airheaded little child because the Nazi's will think she is harmless and she could them by.

1)I think that the loose step was that every was triping over it and Mr.Rosen drop the package.
2)it is like Little Red Riding because Annmaire is the little grile , the nazi solgers are the wolf and Uncle Henrik is the ganma.
3)I think that she imitate kirsi because she is a litter girle how is delivering luch to fisherman.
